Is Comfort More Important Than Luxury When Designing A Home?

There is something really alluring about a home that strikes the perfect balance between aesthetics and comfort. At the end of a long day, there’s nothing quite like unwinding on a cozy couch under the warm yellow lights. While the idea of a ‘perfect home’ is certainly subjective, we can all agree that every homeowner would want to add a fresh feel while designing a home. Here are a few tips to enhance your living space so that it’s both comfortable and luxurious…

1. Prioritising Spaces Within your Home

For all its visual appeal and chic style, nothing is more disappointing than a bed that can’t give you a good night’s sleep. Begin by prioritising spaces where comfort is paramount. You will want all your spaces of relaxation – couch, bed, dining chairs etc – to have comfort over look. Once you have found the furniture that caters to these needs, you can turn to the decor around it for the optics. High contrast homes are all the rage now. Pairing dark furniture with white or neutral coloured spaces will make each choice stand out by itself.

2. Choosing Soft Fabrics

From curling up on your couch with a good book to just lounging on your bed on the weekend, you will want to feel at home with the kind of fabrics you choose. To this end, find soft fabrics that indulge you and make you feel snug. For bedsheets, cotton has always been the popular choice for its breathability. Soft sherpa-like fabric has a fluffy feel, making it an ideal pullover to throw on a couch. With colossal colour and design choices while designing a home particularly, in duvets, quilt covers, and pullovers for your couch, hunt for soft fabrics you are sure to find something that makes you feel snug.

3. Definitive Style on Walls, Doors and Drapes

Once your prioritised areas have been imbued with comfort, you can now focus on the features that are definitively enhanced on visuals. These include everything from your walls, ceilings, windows frames, and drapes. Remember that comfort is as much about the optics as about the function. So choose colours on the wall that are easy on the eyes and complement the furniture. You can add a fresh feel to your entryway door with just a vibrant pop of colour. Lastly, drapes can be a combination of function and aesthetic. You needn’t worry about the fabric here – as long as it blocks light and blends with your overall design!

4. Reflecting Personal Choices

While many designs in decor magazines and Pinterest boards may look stunning in pictures, it won’t matter much if they don’t please you. Some may look comfortable in pictures but may not be the best fit for you. It’s smart to scout for furniture and get a feel of them in a retail store; rather than picking them from a catalogue. You don’t necessarily have to follow current trends because personal likes feel more comfortable than anything else. Where traditional, rustic furnishings bring warmth and add character to your house; a modern decor while designing a home will yield a minimalist aesthetic.
