Tips & Tricks for Moving House with Children

Tips & Tricks for Moving House with Children – iBuild New Do you have young children? If you do, and you’re building a new house, you may be worried about how you’re going to wrangle your kids on moving day. The truth is, moving with children isn’t easy, but it also isn’t impossible.

Kent Removals & Storage has been moving Australian families for over 70 years. During that time, they’ve learned how to keep the kids happy on moving day. With Kent’s tips and tricks moving day will go off without a hitch, leaving you to settle in to your newly built home.

Maintain Routine

Kids love routine. So, one of the main reasons they act up on moving day is that they may be struggling with all the change. To combat this change, try to keep the rest of their routine as consistent as possible. If they still get to go to school, leisure activities and friends’ places before the move, they’ll be better equipped to cope with the upheaval.

Double Your Preparation Time

For every young child you have, you need to double the amount of time you plan on spending for packing and preparation. Kids have a lot of toys and clothes, and they can’t pack anything themselves, which means it’s all up to you.

Show Them Their New Home

While you might be excited about the move, your kids probably aren’t. Kids get attached to their home and their local area, which is why it’s important you give them a chance to get used to their new neighbourhood. If you are moving interstate or moving overseas, it’s vital you take them on a trip before you make the final move. This ensures they have something to look forward to, rather than the fear of the unknown.

Keep the Stress Levels Down

If you’re stressed, your kids will be stressed too. Children are sponges, and they look to you for cues on how they should feel about a situation. It’s undeniable that you will feel a little panicked at some stage during the move, but it’s essential that you keep this hidden from your children and maintain a calm exterior.

Liberal Parenting for a Day

Moving day is not the day for strict parenting. If the kids are safe and occupied, let them do whatever they like. If that means eating a whole bag of lollies and spending the entire day on the iPad then so be it. Moving day is all about the move; you can parent again once it’s done.

Don’t Pack Clutter

Kid’s rooms are notorious areas for clutter. They tire of toys quickly and grow out of clothes even quicker, meaning storage spaces are full of things that are no longer needed. Moving is the perfect opportunity to sell or dispose of these items. Just make sure you do it when the kids aren’t around. Otherwise, you’ll be subjected to a lot of protests.

Don’t Turn Down Help

If you can find anyone to look after the kids, take it! Even if you can get help for part of the day, it will allow you to do a lot more than you can if you’re trying to look after kids. If you need some more moving advice, take a look at the Ultimate Moving House Checklist.
