New Design Ideas: Boho Style Bedroom

During the last couple of years, we have witnessed a revival of retro and vintage elements in the worlds of fashion and interior design. Bright colours, daring floral patterns and over-the-top materials create a visual impact that leaves most people breathless. This style is perfect for those who prefer living in a home that is filled with life, interesting items and, of course, culture. It’s a unusual style that doesn’t care about modern sensibilities and instead chooses art, creativity, colours, contrast, adventure and freedom from already established conventions. That said, let’s go over some ideas on how to incorporate that beautiful boho style into your bedroom.

1. Use Bohemian Art To Enrich Your Bedroom

Blank walls go against everything boho stands for. Cover them in works of your favourite bohemian artists, writers, musicians and designers. Use paintings and murals to tell your story and don’t be reserved when it comes to paintings celebrating the human body. Norman Lindsay is an Australian artist and a bohemian who’s famous for his beautiful paintings of the human form . If you wish to support local and otherwise unknown artists, make sure to visit Etsy and Pinterest. You’d be surprised by the amount of boho art people are making and hosting on similar sites.

2. Don’t Be Afraid To Experiment With Colours

Although there are no specific rules regarding bohemian décor, metallic and earthy warm colours are a good start. Think terracotta brown, gold, saturated blue, electric purple and fiery orange. There’s no place for white in a bohemian bedroom, so make sure to fill out the room with as many warm colours as possible. Granted, some hues are better than others when it comes to inducing sleep. However, this is hardly an issue for those who want to enrich their lives with this unique and vivid style.

3. Experiment With Textures And Patterns

Use textural contrasts to give your bedroom more personality. You can combine exposed brick walls with ornate rugs or go with satin bedspreads, parquet wood on the floors and antique brass. Bedrooms that have very high ceilings can support as many elements like these without feeling overcrowded. Make sure the patterns you’re using interact well with each other, instead of distracting your attention from one texture to another. You can use materials such as sisal and burlap and mix them with chenille and silk for that mix-and-match type of feel.

4. Add Some Flare To Your Bed

Like everything else in a boho-styled room, even your bed needs to be a piece of art. Think about what you should do to it to make it more appealing. For example, you can use a lavish pile of small cushions to echo vibrant shades of your carpet or you can use rustic wood for the bed and contrast it with Moroccan furnishings and padded headboard with matching sheets. Other ideas include a beaded curtain, bamboo screen, a favourite shawl or even vintage lace. Aimee & Katy show how much linen and quilts can make a room.

These are just some of the ideas you can use to add the spirit of boho to your bedroom. These are not set in stone and you’re welcome to try out different combinations and colour schemes. When it comes to light, try to keep it warm and indirect. You can achieve this with a vintage lampshade, filigree lanterns and light diffusers you can stick to your windows. Whatever you do and whichever colours, materials and furniture you choose, the goal is to tell a personal story using décor, so don’t be afraid to experiment. Remember, the point of boho is not in matching colours and decor. Rather, it’s about being free to express yourself in an adventurous and creative way.
