Forming part of the City of Liverpool, Austral is a New South Wales suburb situated approximately 42 km south-west of Sydney’s CBD. The area is notable for its somewhat unique design, with the layout of streets forming a grid-like pattern where every horizontal road is named ‘Avenue’ in numbers increasing from south to north. The suburb’s attractive mix of older, larger properties and smaller, more contemporary dwellings has recently prompted a high demand for land and property amongst young families and professionals.

The Neighbours
The age distribution of the suburb is skewed towards a slightly older population at present, with recent data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics listing the median age of residents as 43 years. Of the approximate 3,300 residents, children aged 0-14 comprise 16.5%, while young people aged 15-29 account for 19.8% of the population. With the area’s ongoing residential development, it is anticipated that young families and professionals chasing larger, yet more affordable homes will continue to flock to the area.
The Commute
The suburb is largely serviced by Bringelly Road which connects the area to the Sydney CBD via the Westlink M7. While travel via car to the city is an approximately 55-minute journey, transport via rail takes a slightly longer 75-mins. The nearby train stations of Leppington and Edmondson Park provide Austral residents access to several different railway lines and also a number of bus routes.
The School Run
Austral and its adjacent suburbs host a mix of highly regarded public and private, primary and secondary schools, including Austral Public School, St Anthony of Padua Catholic School, and Unity College. The Grove Academy, along with a number of other early learning and childcare facilities, is conveniently located within the vicinity of the major school and shopping districts. Although not situated particularly close to leading universities, travel to Sydney’s city centre takes less than an hour. For those more inclined to learn a trade or undertake an apprenticeship, the Glenfield, Macarthur and Miller campuses of TAFE NSW are all closely located to the suburb.

Retail Therapy
Residents have access to the smaller and more local shops of Willowdale Shopping Centre and also the larger selection of retail, business and civic facilities offered at the Crossroads Homemaker Centre and the Valley Plaza. Westfield Sydney and Pitt Street Mall are both less than an hour from Austral and provide a more unique mix of boutique and popular chain stores, alongside a wide variety of casual and fine-dining options.
What’s Going On?
Though an older town in the midst of ongoing development, Austral, and its surrounding suburbs, provides various leisure pursuits to accommodate an active lifestyle. The WV Scott Memorial Park, in particular, is a favourite of locals, offering plenty of space for the kids while providing the perfect picnic setting. With its large fields and numerous sporting facilities, the park is emphasised as a space for activity and leisure away from the fast pace of city-life. Combining the benefits of city living with the scenery and peace of the country, the suburb is also well-known for its sprawling green acres and proximity to popular golf courses. The nearby courses of Cabramatta and Twin Creeks provide picturesque views of the surrounding scenery, professional golfing shops and venues for private and corporate functions.
