Suburb Profile: Morphett Vale, SA 5162

Taking its name from South Australian pioneer, landowner and politician John Morphett, the coastal haven of Morphett Vale is one of Adelaide’s largest and most historic towns. Forming part of the City of Onkaparinga, the suburb is situated approximately 25km south of the Adelaide CBD and boasts a stunning combination of period homes, contemporary suburban dwellings and medium-density housing. Perfect for retirees, professionals and young families with children, this thriving, coastal haven offers all the convenience and connection of an urban lifestyle amidst acres of pristine parkland and manicured gardens. Check out our comprehensive guide to this scenic suburb below…

The Neighbours

The age distribution of the suburb is skewed towards a slightly older population at present, with recent data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics listing the median age of residents as 40 years. Of the approximate 24,000 residents, children aged 0-14 comprise 17.5%, while young people aged 15-29 account for 18.7% of the population. Given the ongoing development of several apartment complexes, it is anticipated that young families and professionals chasing larger, yet more affordable homes will continue to flock to the area.

The Commute

The suburb is largely serviced by Main South Road, which connects the area to the Adelaide CBD via the Southern Expressway. While travel via this route is an approximately 30-minute journey, transport via rail from the nearby station of Christie Downs averages an only slightly longer 45 minutes on the Seaford line.

The School Run

Morphett Vale and its surrounding suburbs host a number of highly regarded public and private schools, including Pimpala Primary School and Woodcroft College. Coorara Preschool, along with a number of other early learning and childcare facilities, is conveniently located within the vicinity of the major school and shopping districts. Travel to The University of Adelaide is only a short 30-minute journey, while the Noarlunga campus of TAFE SA is similarly close.

Retail Therapy

Residents have access to the smaller and more local shops of Woodcroft Town Centre and also the larger selection of retail, business and civic facilities offered at Southgate Square. Rundle Mall and the Myer Centre are both less than 30 minutes away and provide a more unique mix of boutique and popular chain stores, alongside a wide variety of casual and fine-dining options.

What’s Going On?

Residents of this suburb have plenty of options when it comes to keeping active and entertaining the whole family. The Ochre Point and Moana beaches have proven particularly popular with locals, largely in the wake of the recently implemented coastal walking track spanning over 70km. Offering picturesque views of the stunning South Australian coast, as well as several scenic picnic spots, the track successfully links a number of prominent beaches. Also, a favourite of locals and tourists alike, the renowned wine-producing region of McLaren Vale is situated less than 10-minutes from this thriving suburb. With a number of high-profile wineries offering daily tours and a relaxing atmosphere to enjoy quality wine and fine-dining, it’s perfect for a relaxing weekend outing or even a more low-key weekday dinner!
