The Nordcon story started with Jorma (Norm) Pietila when he migrated from Finland and arrived at Bonegilla in 1959 with little money and a basic knowledge of English. In his early years in Australia, he worked on the Ghan railway, based in Williams Creek, SA.
In the 1960’s he moved to Melbourne with his family which saw him working on many housing developments and commercial sites, building sewer mains and storm water drains and establishing his own business ‘Norm’s Drainage’. This included the early works at Tullamarine Airport and Doncaster Shopping Centre.
In 1974 Norm moved his family to Wodonga, to take advantage of the work opportunities and decentralisation push by the then Whitlam Government. Norm’s Drainage won contracts to work on many roads and infrastructure in Albury, Wodonga and surrounding areas for local councils and the Albury Wodonga Development Corporation.
In the mid 80’s, Norm, teamed up with another Finnish Immigrant family the Alatalo brothers and this saw the start of a venture into developing land.
In the late 90’s Norm retired, but, by then his eldest son Eric was managing the family business now known as Nordcon Construction with brothers Michael and David who are Managers in the civil construction company.
Looking at a map of the city of Wodonga today, we can see that the Nordcon group has proudly built over 50% of the new road infrastructure and major sewerage and drainage infrastructure created since 1974.
Eric has continued to evolve and grow the land development sector of the business and this has seen many long and enduring partnerships that have formed the Nordcon brand seen today.
The company has been proud to sell land to many Home Buyers starting their first foray into real estate and creating their dream home or investment property.
Looking to the future, we have several thousand Lots yet to be developed, in a range of locations across the Border region. We look forward to continuing to provide quality developments for Buyers and significant employment opportunities for local people.
