Take a leaf out the experts’ book and make the process of creating your perfect room easy and fun! A mood board allows you to collate, organise and compare your interior design ideas so you can readily visualise your dream space.
Check out our guide below for all the tips, tricks and handy hints for using a mood board to achieve your interior design dreams!
GET INSPIRED
Save yourself the expense and energy of lugging furniture home only to realise it just doesn’t work with the room. Piece together samples of paint and fabric, furniture cut-outs and inspirational pictures to see what works well together and what doesn’t. Start by considering the constraints of your space – whether it be an awkward room layout, an existing piece of furniture, or a paint colour you can’t change. Photograph or document these features on your mood board so you’ve got some preliminary points to keep in mind when researching.
Pinterest and Instagram provide an endless stream of designs and pieces to work with and can be a great place to find examples of looks you love. Catalogues, home and garden magazines and kitchen and bathroom brochures provide equally great sources of interior design inspiration. Remember to collect any fabric swatches or paint samples you may be considering and add them to your mood board for easy colour comparison.
CHOOSE YOUR FORMAT
With so many great free apps and websites available, your mood board can be either digital or traditional. Find what works best for you. For those tech-savvy designers, we recommend the trusted Style Sourcebook or Roomstyler websites for easy set-up and layout. If you prefer the convenience of snapping and storing with your phone however, Morpholio Board and Mural are great alternatives, which allow you to access and add to your board as inspiration strikes. The traditional soundboard or corkboard approach is our personal favourite and allows you to easily pin and remove your interior design ideas as necessary.
EDIT AND REFINE
The great thing about a mood board is the way it’s easy to mix and match ideas and designs and assess what’s working and what’s not. Is your mood board a little dull and lacking in colour? Or perhaps you’ve opted all for one shade? Or drifted off focus and combined too many clashing elements? Sitting back and considering your creative flow is an important part of the process and allows you to determine just what colours, furniture and decorative pieces are going to help you achieve your perfect room.
Now that you’re prepared, find inspiration and get styling! Create the perfect mood board for all your interior design dreams and do it like the pros!
