Surrounded by vast lands and natural wetlands, the suburb of Doreen brings a unique scenic charm along with a growing neighbourhood. Located within the iconic state of Victoria, it can be found around 35km north-east from Melbourne’s buzzing Central Business District providing a pleasant suburban getaway. Its origins began in 1844 when Patrick Reid settled into the country, calling the place “Hazel Glen” and then later renaming it during 1895. Situated right next door to the suburbs of Mernda and Arthurs Creek, this community combines together a welcoming town life and nature’s finest to a central place.

The Neighbours

Doreen forms a part of the City of Whittlesea and the Shire of Nillumbik, with about 21,300 residents calling the place their home. With an estimated amount of 7,360 private dwellings, the suburb continues to expand with more people continuing to settle in. The Australian Bureau of Statistics highlights around 5,850 families with the median age being 31 years old. In terms of demographics, young children between the ages of 1 to 15 years old account for 30% of the total population while the 30 to 45-year old age group make up 28%.

The School Run

Students and parents have the freedom to choose amongst a range of private and public schools right within the vicinity. The Doreen Primary School, Plenty Valley Christian College, Ivanhoe Grammar School and Hazel Glen College are a few options to consider for all year levels. Meanwhile, the Laurimar Kindergarten, Jump! Swim School, Laurimar Primary School and Warm Nest Family Daycare are also available for younger students and just a 5-minute drive away. Tertiary students are able to conveniently attend the Bundoora Campus of RMIT University which is a quick 20-minute drive from the town centre.

The Commute

The area is set at an ideal location that is right between a number of train stations on either side. The Mernda, Hurtsbridge, Wattle Glen and Hawkstowe railway stations offer passengers regular services with all between a 10 to 15-minute drive from home. Serviced by Public Transport Victoria, commuters are directly taken all the way to Melbourne’s city centre along the Mernda or Hawkstowe train lines. With public transport, the journey time varies from 50 minutes to an hour. Alternatively, it usually takes around 50 minutes by car with drivers mainly utilising the C727 highway and Yan Yean Road. For travellers, the Melbourne Airport is just around 30 to 40 minutes way with bus services also available.

Retail Therapy

For shoppers, they are able to enjoy easy access to a handful of nearby stores and dining places. The Mernda Junction, Rivergum Village and Westfield Plenty Valley Shopping Centre bring the whole family’s retail needs to one spot with supermarkets, clothing stores and houseware facilities. In addition, the Central South Morang, Diamond Creek Shopping Centre, St Helena Marketplace and Uni Hill Factory outlets provide even more to choose from.

What’s Going On in Doreen?

Doreen showcases a lively town for everybody to enjoy, with countless lakes and parks scattered all around for residents to maximise. The local dog park, Lauries Field and Pinehill Walkway helps get the community on the move. The Laurimar Skate Bowl and Football Club create the perfect opportunity to stay active and build connections. The Doreen Wellness Market event is held this September with stallholders and live music, aiming to raise awareness on men’s mental health.
