Kitchen Design: Islands Are More Than Just A Counter

Taking the time to invest in your kitchen design can really set it apart from the everyday look and add to the overall appeal of your room. Kitchen islands aren’t just functional they can be stylish, modern and an architectural focal point too! While they create the illusion of space and provide an area suitable for food prep, casual dining or even nightly homework, they certainly don’t need to be bland or drab.

Combine function with aesthetic appeal and find inspiration for your kitchen design below!

CONSIDER SHAPE
The size and shape of the island depend foremost on the layout and proportions of the room. The general design rule for enclosed kitchens is to ensure the island is in the centre of the room. This placement allows easy access from every side while preventing the island from becoming an obstacle. For open floor plans, however, a perimeter island is a viable alternative.

ADD SEATING
The addition of low-profile seating is one simple way to emphasise your island and create a casual and comfortable environment perfect for socialisation. Not only is your island perfect for cooking prep, it now allows for informal dining!

CREATE EXTRA STORAGE
While an island frees up counter space, it also decreases kitchen clutter by creating additional storage. If your appliances are bulky or your cooking items crowd the countertop, extra storage is the easiest way to create a functional and streamlined kitchen design.

USE OVERHEAD SPACE
Be it suspended storage, a range hood or pendant lighting, utilising the space above your island is the most effective way to maximise the whole of your kitchen. Displaying your fanciest stemware or your prettiest pan collection allows you to easily express your style and contributes to the room’s aesthetic.

TRY MIRRORED SURFACES
Incorporating a mirrored look lends your kitchen a modern minimalist edge. Polished stainless-steel panels create a sense of symmetry, giving your room a distinctive appeal, while the reflection provides the illusion of a larger space.

CONTRAST IS KEY
When it comes to kitchen design, colour is everything! Opting for white is perhaps the easiest way to create contrast. Not only does white lighten your room but it stands out even more when used with a darker colour and can emphasise your kitchen island to good effect!
