Suburb Profile: Pakenham VIC 3810

Situated 56km away from the hustle and bustle of the Melbourne CBD, Pakenham is a quiet, yet thriving suburb, which manages to retain its idyllic country feel in the wake of ongoing residential developments. The southeastern suburb forms part of the Shire of Cardinia and is best suited for families and retirees seeking to lay their roots in a homely and expanding town.

The Neighbours
The median age of residents in Pakenham is 32, which is largely comprised of families with young children and older couples. Children aged 0-14 years and persons aged 65 years and over respectively account for the suburb’s average population of 46,500.

The Commute
Access to the city is convenient from the Pakenham Train Station, with the average journey to the Melbourne CBD taking just over one hour. Travel via the Princes Freeway to the CBD is approximately 50 minutes. The 2007 addition of the Pakenham Bypass, which encompasses the 24km stretch of road spanning Beaconsfield to Nar Nar Goon, has considerably eased town traffic.

The school run
With over 35 schools and a mix of both public and private options, Pakenham caters especially for families with children. The suburb hosts a number of childcare providers, with many conveniently situated in the vicinity of schools and supermarkets. Travel to Berwick’s Federation University and Chisholm Institute is only 10 minutes, with slightly longer journeys of approximately 40 minutes to Monash and Deakin Universities in Clayton and Burwood respectively.

Shopping for the family
Residents of Pakenham are only 15 minutes away from one of Australia’s largest shopping centres, Westfield Fountain Gate and, more locally, have access to Pakenham Place Shopping Centre. Providing a mix of well-known and local businesses, as well as access to Woolworths and nearby petrol stations, Pakenham Central Marketplace is a great alternative for those wanting a more peaceful retail experience.

What’s going on?
Pakenham offers plenty of outdoor leisure pursuits to accommodate an active lifestyle. The Cardinia Life Centre boasts access to pools, a 24/7 gym and a basketball stadium, with plenty of opportunities to join local sports facilities available. The natural beauty of Lysterfield Lake is only a 25 minute journey away and Berwick Botanical Gardens can easily be accessed in less than 15 minutes.

The nearby D’Angelo Estate Vineyards and Cannibal Creek Wineries boast stunning views and relaxing experience. For those more artistically inclined, the Casey Cultural Centre is also only a 15 minute trip from Pakenham, with a large regional theatre, art gallery, studio, function rooms and library at your disposal. The kids are sure to be entertained with a unique ride through the Dandenong Ranges on Australia’s best-known steam railway, Puffing Billy.

The Pakenham Racing Club in Tynong provides weekly races and events for the keen punter and offers a modern Skyline Suite ideal for hosting any occasion from birthdays to corporate receptions.
