Tips for Moving into Your New House

You have just built the new house of your dreams and your moving day is quickly approaching. At iBuildNew we understand how easy it is to feel overwhelmed by everything you have to do. Preparing ahead of time is key to a smooth transition, allowing you to enjoy and take pride in your new house.

With the help of our friends at Movinghub we have created you a checklist, so that you can move is a smooth and stress free process.

Before the move

Preparation is key to any move, whether you have a lot of items to move, you’re downsizing or you are moving with kids. Organising everything prior to you move into your new home will reduce the chance of common mishaps when moving house.

Declutter: Reducing the number of items you have to move will make moving day even more manageable. This can include donating or selling large items, sifting through your documents and throwing those you no longer need, or simply implementing a minimal lifestyle, where only the most precious items remain if your life.

Communicate: Informing important parties that you are moving will save you a lot of issues in the future. Remember to tell service providers such as Australia Post, ATO, Medicare and health providers.

Packing supplies: Gathering or purchasing the essential packing supplies prior to moving day is a must. Why not upload requests on social sites for moving boxes to avoid purchasing new boxes, and don’t forget the packing tape and permanent markers to label your boxes.

Getting quotes: It is a great idea to look into hiring professional and experienced removalists who can make the move easier. Shop around and make sure that you are getting the best offer. Additionally, if you only have a few belongings you can share a moving truck with another mover and save more money.

Floor plan: Looking over the floor plan of your new house will allow you to confirm what furniture will and will not fit, and ultimately save you a massive headache on the day when the couch is too wide for the doorway.

Moving day

Now that you have prepared for the move, many potential obstacles have been removed. However, there are still many factors to consider on the day you move into your new house.

What to bring: It can take time to unpack all your belongings and feel at home in your new house. However, while you’re still settling in, make sure that you have packed all the necessities in a convenient location. Packing a suitcase for the first few nights will relieve the stress when you can’t find the one box with your clothes in it.

Be present: Make sure that you are present on moving day to oversee the process. You will be able to help with anything the removalists are unsure about, and make sure that all your large items are where you need them. This will save you time and effort!

Secure a parking spot: If you are moving into a location that has restricted parking, make sure that the moving truck has a spot, or you could be paying extra costs.

Document it: It isn’t every day that you move into a new house. This is an exciting time that you may want to remember. Creating lasting memories for you and your family can be as easy as a few photos.

After the move

Post-moving-day tasks, although they may feel frustrating or pointless, can be vital for making your new house a home.

Smoke detectors: Make sure that you install smoke detectors in your new home immediately. This is not something you should put off.

LED bulbs: Installing LED bulbs may feel like it is on the bottom of your to-do list, can save you significant money on your energy bills

Introduce yourself: Creating a positive community in your new neighbourhood will benefit you and your family significantly over the years. Creating positive relationships with your neighbours and the wider community will make your new living environment more enjoyable.

Moving with kids:

It can often be difficult for children to move house, especially if they need to move away from their friends and relocate to a new school. However, making this experience as exciting as possible, and making your kids feel at ease will reduce overall stress of moving into your new house.

Throw a going away party: Let your kids say goodbye to their old friends in a fun environment that they can look back on. Make sure that you remind your kids that they can always stay in touch with their old friends but that they will continue to have fun in their new house.

Show your kids: Allowing them to have a look at the new house, especially when it is being built, can make the process more exciting. You can also show them the new community that they will be apart of- the park, the pool, the restaurants and their new school.

Moving with pets:

Fur babies can be a huge concern for some when they are moving into their new house. Make the transition easier for both you and them with just a few changes.

Toys: Introducing them to their new space is made easier if you unpack all of their toys and bed before they are allowed in. This will make it feel familiar and put them at ease

Sleepovers: Avoid having them staying at your old house during the final stages of the move. Sending them to stay with family or friends will reduce the anxiety and distress they will be in when the house in empty.
