Suburb Profile: Thornlands QLD 4164

Taking its name from George Thorn, a former influential landowner and humble farmer, the QLD suburb of Thornlands has grown to become a thriving residential hotspot. It is well-known for its coastal, yet country vibe. Situated approximately 28 km east-south-east of Brisbane, this up-and-coming suburb is particularly suited for professionals and young families that are seeking to lay their roots in a homely and expanding town.

THE NEIGHBOURS
The age distribution of the suburb is skewed towards a slightly older population. With recent data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the median age of residents lists as 39 years. Of the approximate 15,500 residents, children between the ages 0-14 comprise 24.9%, while young people aged 20-29 account for 11.1% of the population. With the area’s ongoing residential development, it is anticipated that young families and professionals chasing larger, yet more affordable homes will continue to flock to the area.

THE COMMUTE
The suburb is largely serviced by Wellington Street and Boundary and Cleveland-Redland Bay Roads. They all provide convenient access to surrounding suburbs and the Brisbane CBD. While travel via car to Brisbane is an approximate 40-min journey, transport via rail takes a slightly longer 57-mins. Although the area does not currently have its own train station, Cleveland and Ormiston Stations are both closely located to the suburb. Access to several different bus routes is also available from there.

THE SCHOOL RUN
Thornlands and its adjacent suburbs host a mix of highly-regarded public and private primary and secondary schools. This includes Bayview State School, Faith Lutheran College and Victoria Point Primary School. A number of childcare and early learning facilities are conveniently located within the vicinity of schools and shopping centres. While not situated particularly close to major universities, travel to the Brisbane CBD takes less than an hour. Several prominent TAFEs are also located within the area.

The nearby Capalaba Shopping Centre also hosts a number of popular chain and boutique stores, as well a mix of cafes and fine dining options.

WHAT’S GOING ON?
Falling within the Redlands Coast region, Thornlands provides close access to sand and salt, with the Moreton Bay Beach just a short 30-min journey away. From here residents can island hop and enjoy a scenic cruise through the clear waters of Peel Island or Horseshoe Bay, while soaking in the serene atmosphere of quaint, coastal cafes and trendy, hipster stores. A number of walking tracks are also available for those seeking the calm and comfort of nature, with many hosting stunning views of the bushland and bay below. For those seeking to enjoy life’s finer pleasures, Thornlands is conveniently close to Queensland’s largest and most awarded winery, Sirromet Winery. Aside from offering a first class dining experience, Sirromet also hosts the popular SupaGolf, an enlarged version of mini-golf, which has proven a favourite of children adults alike!
