Of the approximate 6,951 people living in the suburb, children aged 0-14 comprise 17.5%, while people aged over 65 accounts for 23.5% of the population.

Transportation

The most common method of transport for commuting to work is via car, with 60.1% people driving to work, while 6.6% of the total population working from home. A small percentage of the population used trains from Kyneton station to surrounding regions like Malmsbury, Elphinstone, Harcourt, and Bendigo. Among these, Kyneton Primary School and Kyneton High School are the two most favoured public schools in the area. Our Lady of the Rosary Parish Primary School on High St and Sacred Heart College in Kyneton are the two private schools in the suburb. The two TAFE institutes – Bendigo Regional Institute of TAFE and Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE – have their campuses in Kyneton.

Local Amenities

Kyneton’s plush heritage makes it a delightful centre for traditional festivals and historic sites. Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival that takes place in September is one such flagship event that invites visitors to indulge in flower shows and performing arts events among other festivities. Other events include The Kyneton Music Festival and Lost Trades Fair that take place in the summer. For a day out with the kids, Kyneton Community Park in Botanic Gardens by the Campaspe River offers fine picnic spots overlooking exotic flora and fauna.

Amongst the endless tourist spots, the historic walk from Piper to Powlett Street remains a personal favourite for local residents and visitors. Lined with nineteenth-century granite, the bluestone architecture seen on churches, railway stations, and schools is one to watch for in the suburb.
