Suburb Profile: Golden Bay

Known for its relaxed atmosphere, coastal scenery and green parks, Golden Bay in Perth is the perfect beachside haven to raise a family or escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Located in the outer suburbs of Western Australia, the town sits about an hours drive from the Central Business District and a major airport.

Demographics

Being a small beach town on Perth’s coastline, Golden Bay is a great fit for families, retirees and those that just love the water. The 2016 census revealed the population lay around 4,000 people with a median age of 31. 51.1% of the suburbs population revealed to be families with children. The area is apart of the City of Rockingham, Perth’s fastest-growing municipality over the past decade whose population is set to grow to 200,000 residents by 2031- making it a prime location for industry growth.

Transportation

The Kwinana Freeway services the town and will take drivers roughly an hour to reach the city’s centre. National Route 1 can also be easily accessible which can be used to take travellers into the neighbouring town of Mandurah. Whilst the suburb does not yet have its own train station, projects are in the works for the construction of the Karnup platform. For the meantime, commuters can use the Mandurah railway line, boarding at Rockingham which will take them all the way into the CBD. For students, the Murdoch university Rockingham campus can be accessed via the Kwinana Freeway with an approximately 42-minute drive.

School Run

Golden Bay Primary School is an independent public school for Years K-6, located within the estate, just a short walk from most homes. Schools in neighbouring areas are easily accessible to families including Comet Bay college (7-12) which is located in Secret Harbour, just a short four minutes away. Those looking to complete tertiary education can do so at the two university campus’ located in Rockingham – Murdoch University and the Challenger Institute of Technology.

Retail Therapy

Golden Bay is situated less than 5 minutes’ drive to Secret Harbour Shopping Square, which has a range of speciality stores on offer as well as dining options and a mini-golf course. This vicinity is also host to Secret Harbour Dockers Sporting Association and Golf Course, Rhonda Scarrott Reserve & Sports Pavillion. Lakelands shopping centre is only a further 10 minutes up the road which is the largest shopping precinct between the Mandurah and Rockingham town centres. The 20,000sqm centre is anchored by Coles, K-Mart and ALDI and boasts more than 40 specialty stores. Lakelands is also a community space providing a wide range of services with a childcare centre, library, a range of medical professionals, travel agencies, restaurants, cafes, fast food outlets, beauty salons and even a 24/7 gym meaning residents do not have to travel far to have all their needs fulfilled.

Local Amenities

Being a beachfront slice of paradise, Golden Bay is an ideal destination for those who love all things sand and surf.  Not too many people other than locals visit the beach, so you can enjoy all the perks the beach has to offer all year round without worrying about huge crowds. The foreshore has barbecues, two separate playgrounds and a dog exercise area, making it the perfect hotspot for a visit with the whole family. The suburb itself is host to multiple state of the art playgrounds and play facilities as well as an extensive skate park that will keep the kids entertained for hours. Great cafe’s line the coast, giving you an abundance of options for your Saturday morning brunch plans. Being a community-driven suburb, regular events take place including The Annual Have a Go Day and Golden Bay Coast Care Tree Planting Day which are fun activities for all ages. If you are a lover of markets, take a stroll at the Mandjar Markets, located just a quick 18 minutes away.
