Demographics

Based on the 2016 Australian Bureau of Statistics census, Nairne is home to 5,042 local residents. It’s relatively affordable house prices continue to attract young people, with a median age of 35 years hoping to start a family. Nairne’s population grew by approximately 14% between 2011 and 2016 and comprised of 22.3% children aged between 0-14 years. Nairne had homeownership of 74% in 2016, with more than one-fifth of families coming from full-time dual income.

Transportation

The suburb is just 7km away from its largest town, Mount Barker, with efficient means of public transport. Commuters have access to Adelaide Metro, with buses running daily from Mount Barker to Adelaide’s city centre with connecting buses to serve Naire residents. Nairne is less than 40 minutes drive away from Adelaide’s Central Business District. A new on-demand bus service is now being implemented on trial for the local residents to travel within the Mount Barker township.

Shopping For The Family

Historic stone buildings on the main street are very well integrated with Nairne’s contemporary shopping district. They offer a whole range of everyday essentials, including Coles, Kmart, a cinema, newsagency and takeaway eateries. The Mount Barker Central Shopping Centre is situated in the heart of the hills in the Mount Lofty ranges, a short 11 minutes drive from the suburb. The Barker Plaza is an alternative small shopping precinct, only about 9km distance via the National Highway M1. If you are an avid collector of vintage goods and wish to contribute to the local economy, head down to The Nairne Market for a real bargain. It’s opened 6 days a week and has been serving the local community for a good thirty years!

The School Run 

Within Nairne and several of its nearby suburbs, there is a vast array of quality educational options. Nairne School and Littlehampton Primary and Preschool are a 10-minute drive from Mount Barker and provide education from preschool right through Year 7. Mount Barker Waldorf School is Australia’s leading Steiner school and offers a school curriculum from Kindergarten to Year 12. For the older kids, the University of Adelaide is 38 minutes away by car.
