The Victorian suburb of Diggers Rest is located approximately 30 kilometres north of Melbourne’s CBD and is part of the local governments of Hume and Melton. Located near Sunbury, Diggers Rest became an important stopping place on the route to the goldfields in the 1860s and later developed into a little village, offering the basic needs for travellers passing by. The Neighbourhood
According to the 2016 Census data, there were about 2,800 people living in Diggers Rest by the end of 2016. With more than 700 of them being in their 20s or early 30s, the dominant age group are young professionals. Apart from that, there is a big number of people between 45 and 60 years old living in the suburb. Whilst most people stated to have Australian ancestry only, approximately 40% of people have all kinds of European ancestors, making the suburb a diverse and multicultural place!

The Commute
Diggers Rest has a train station that is connected to the Sunbury railway line. When catching a train there, it takes you approximately 45 minutes to get to Melbourne’s CBD. If you commute by car, you can expect to get to Melbourne’s city centre in about 35 minutes. Other than that, you can use the bus route that connects the suburb to Monee Ponds and Sunbury.
Shopping For The Family
You can find a local ‘Food Works’ supermarket, liquor store as well as a pharmacy in Diggers Rest. There are also a few little restaurants and cafes offering pastry, Australian and Italian food. For a big shopping spree, you should take advantage of the several shopping spots Sunbury has to offer. The most popular among those would be the Sunbury Square Shopping Centre, located in the East of the little suburb with many restaurants and cafes, retail stores and supermarkets.

The School Run
Diggers Rest so far only offers a local primary school, which is located in the city centre of the little suburb. Further primary schools, as well as secondary schools, can be found in and around Sunbury. There are not only public and private schools but also several Christian institutions as well as schools for children with special needs. Most of them can be reached within less than 10 minutes by either car or bus.
