A suburb that lends nature a sacred charm and a curious sense of history, Tahmoor in the Wollondilly region of New South Wales is one to watch out for. Named after the native pigeon of the area, Tahmoor is said to have derived its name from the Aboriginal word for ‘bronze winged pigeon.’ Most notable for its stunning gorges and the iconic Mermaid pools, Tahmoor is now the chosen suburb for retirees and couples raising children.

Location Demographics 

The age distribution of the suburb is slightly less than the national average, with recent data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics listing the median age of residents as 37 years. Of the approximate 5,067 people living in Tahmoor, children aged 0-14 comprise 21.6%, while people aged over 65 accounts for 15.2% of the population. With over 45.1% of its population comprising married people, Tahmoor is an ideal suburb for couples and retirees.

Travel & Infrastructure

The most common method of transport for commuting to work is via car, with 71.2% people driving to work. A very small percentage of the population uses public transport like trains. The closest train station of the suburb is the Tahmoor Railway Station on the Main South Line. Services run to Campbellton, Sydney Central, Moss Vale and Goulburn with stops in surrounding suburbs like Picton, Douglas Park and Bargo. On the other hand, Picton Buslines offers bus services for inter-suburb travel.

Residents have access to shopping centres like Tahmoor Town Centre located at the corner of Remembrance Drive and Thirlmere Way. Other shopping options like op-shops, variety stores, bakeries etc are lined up on Remembrance Driveway providing a wide selection of decor, clothes, confectionery and giftware.

Schools & Recreation

Tahmoor Public School and Wollondilly Anglican College are some of the favoured schools in the region. The suburb also has a large number of kindergarten and playhouse schools for early learning. Other schooling options are found in the surrounding suburbs of Picton and Buxton. University of New South Wales is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes drive from Tahmoor.

Local Amenities

Reminiscent of the Australian outback, Tahmoor’s Warrabunda Scout Park has outdoor camping shed equipped with drinking water, showers and other camp facilities for a range of adventure sports from rock climbing to birdwatching.  For professional riders and beginners, Tahmoor’s DNA Dirt Park is a sought after site for BMX enthusiasts on the look for pump tracks and whacky jump lines.

While these are a few favourite sites of the adventure seekers, Tahmoor’s gorgeous Garden Centre is a must-see for stunning selections of shrubs, flowers, and potted plants. A light breakfast at the on-site Le Jardin Cafe overlooking the nursery revitalises the senses amidst the intertwined fragrance of the flora and freshly baked cakes.
