Suburb Profile: Fig Tree Pocket, QLD 4069

True to its name, Fig Tree Pocket is a leafy, affluent suburb situated just eight kilometres west of the Brisbane CBD. Playing host to the city’s most lavish homes, with exclusive river-frontage, the postcode is not accessible to all price-ranges. In early 2009, a local property sold for A $9.5 million. A median property price of $993,000 has contributed to the area’s reputation as low density, quiet and park-like with a population of just 4,000 (ABS, 2016).

The Neighbours

Given the area’s price-tag, Fig Tree Pocket’s demographics are skewed towards established families and couples. Homeowners aged between 45 and 54 are a majorly represented demographic at 30.3%, closely followed by couples and families aged between 55 and 64 (26.5%). The suburb has a low turnover rate, with most locals electing to stay in the area for anywhere between 10 and 20 years.

The School Run

Fig Tree Pocket State School services students from foundation to year six. Located on five hectares of pristine bushland, and in close proximity to the Brisbane River, children enrolled will benefit from both the campus’ natural resources and state-of-the-art facilities. A community early learning centre is also located in the vicinity. The Brisbane Montessori School offers Fig Tree Pocket locals a unique educational experience that seeks to foster the independence and personal development of those enrolled.

The Commute

The convenient commute from Fig Tree Pocket’s semi-rurality to Brisbane’s CBD is one of the most attractive aspects of the suburb. The city can be reached via car in around twenty-five minutes. For those using public transport, the CBD can be accessed in as little as 40 minutes via bus route 445.

Retail Therapy

The one pitfall of this pastoral, elegant suburb is its lack of amenities. This can make it difficult for those without a car, or the elderly, to access necessary services and facilities. There is a distinct absence of local haunts for foodies or coffee-lovers. Medical services are at least a suburb away. Ten minutes by car, Indooroopilly Shopping Centre boasts a range of major retailers.

What’s Going On?

Fig Tree Pocket hosts the iconic Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. Open seven days a week, the sanctuary opened in 1927 for sick and orphaned marsupials. It offers a series of experiences for visitors to connect with and learn from Australia’s native animals. Fig Tree Pocket River Reserve is another notable local attraction and one of Brisbane’s hidden gems. Ample barbeque and picnic amenities are nestled between towering river-gums with a nautical-themed playground adjacent. On a sunny weekend, this is the perfect spot to enjoy the ambience of the river amongst family and friends.
