Suburb Profile: Forest Hill

Forming part of the City of Whitehorse, Forest Hill is a Victorian suburb situated approximately 18 km east of Melbourne’s CBD. This thriving residential hotspot is full of character, boasting an attractive mix of older, larger properties and smaller, more contemporary dwellings. With close access to a number of prominent universities, shopping centres and civic facilities, it’s easy to understand the suburb’s popularity with professionals, retirees and young families with children.

Demographics

The age distribution of the suburb is skewed towards a slightly older population at present, with recent data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics listing the median age of residents as 40 years. Of the approximate 11,000 residents, children aged 0-14 comprise 17.1%, while young people aged 15-29 account for 17.6% of the population. With the area’s ongoing residential development, it is anticipated that young families and professionals chasing all the benefits of city living without the same expense will continue to flock to the area.

Transportation

The area is largely serviced by Canterbury Road and Springvale Road, both of which connect the suburb to the Melbourne CBD via the Monash Freeway. While travel via car to the city is an approximate 30-min journey, transport via Translink takes a slightly longer 35-mins. Blackburn and Glen Waverley railway stations are both closely located to the main areas of the suburb, with access to several different bus routes available from there.

The School Run

Forest Hill and its adjacent suburbs host a mix of highly regarded public and private, primary and secondary schools, including Parkmore Primary School and Emmaus College. Petit Early Learning Journey, along with a number of other preschool and childcare facilities, is conveniently located within the vicinity of the major school and shopping districts. The suburb is situated a mere 10-mins from the Melbourne Campus of Deakin University and only 15-mins from the Wantirna Campus of Swinburne University. For those more inclined to learn a trade or undertake an apprenticeship, the Holmesglen Waverley Campus and Box Hill Institute are both closely located to the suburb.

Retail Therapy

Residents have access to the more local shops of The Glen and also the larger selection of retail, business and civic facilities offered at Forest Hill Chase and Eastland Shopping Centres. Bourke Street Mall and Chadstone Shopping Centre are both less than half an hour from Forest Hill and provide a more unique mix of boutique and popular chain stores, alongside a wide variety of casual and fine-dining options.
