What To Consider When Landscaping Your New Home

After you’ve built your dream home, you might feel as if you’ve reached the end of your journey, finally completing all that hard work. But, to really seal the deal, landscaping your new home is the next step. If you’re after some extra inspiration for your new garden, here are some handy tips to get you going.

Form & Function

Think about what the function of the front and back yard will be. Do you imagine having summer barbecues, or do your kids need plenty of play space? After you’ve figured this out, you’ll be able to pick what kind of shrubbery, flowers, trees or paths you want to lay down in these areas. If you’re going to make the backyard a kid’s or pet’s hangout, consider putting your flower beds in the front yard to avoid any potential mishaps.

As for the front yard, spend some time deciding what would best suit your home’s façade. After all, this will be your guest’s first impression of your new build, so make it count. A garden path is a great place to start and different path designs will make different impressions. When landscaping your new home, pick pavers to suit. If your home is modern, carefully placed concrete steps are a great way to complement, or more rustic pavers will suit an older home.

If you’re going to include a fence, again think about what each section of your yard will be used for. Pets playing in the front yard will need a fence to keep them running off, or if the back yard will be their playpen, a side gate might be the answer. If you’re a pet-free household, you can always keep it simple and stick to a manicured lawn instead of a costly fence.

Maintenance

If you’ve got a busy work schedule, pick hardier plants that require less maintenance, like native Australian plants perfect for surviving with little interaction. This gives the whole family time to enjoy your weekends after a busy week, instead of doing a weeks worth of intensive gardening in two days.

Guidelines & Restrictions

Remember any local guidelines or restrictions to take note of when landscaping your new home. Every council might have different water restrictions, so you might have to give flowers or shrubs that need a significant amount of water a miss. Agapanthus, kangaroo paw and jacarandas are all Australian flowers and trees that are a drought-resistant and beautiful addition to any front or backyard.

Add Value To Your Home

Keep in mind that a quality landscape design could add extra value to your home if it ever comes to selling, so inject some creativity into your design. It might sound obvious, but carefully spacing out flowers or picking trees that will suit your home is the best way to create a cohesive landscape design that potential buyers will love.
