What Makes A House A Home?

Design choices can transform a generic house into a personal homeWhen designing a home, it only takes a few simple steps to incorporate your personal style, tastes and life experiences into a living space. You’d be amazed at the resources you already have sitting around collecting dust – it’s time to put them to use.

Think About Functionality

Your home is where you live, and living comprises many activities such as cooking, cleaning and gardening. For many, home is also the place where you spend most of your time. So when designing a home, you want to make sure that the home design accommodates all of your favourite activities. For example, if you love cooking, then make sure your cooking utensils and kitchen appliances are within reach and placed in a manner that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Add Some Warmth

A home that looks comfortable is universally appealing and practically begs you to curl up to a good book, movie or television show. In order to achieve this aesthetic, fill your home with some soft and comfortable couches, rugs and a generous supply of pillows and throw blankets. For some extra coziness on those lazy days, find a well-lit corner in the living area and make that a little reading nook.

Wall Art

Perhaps the easiest and most creative way to personalise your home is to hang pictures and display memorabilia that reflect your interests and experiences. Unless neutral pictures of flowers and nature are your style, save these pictures for the motels and display homes and instead decorate with images that, as Marie Kondo would say, spark joy. For example, travel lovers can hang up images of their favourite destinations or maps of their favourite cities. Music lovers can display vintage records whilst sports lovers may display photos of their favourite athletes and/or teams. The same also applies to the various trinkets and tchotchkes placed around your living spaces – make it personal. If you have multiple interests, you may consider giving each room a different theme. The possibilities are endless.

Lighting Candles

Nothing feels more like home than the smell of freshly baked goods. Whilst you may not have the time (or skill!) to actually bake, you can still treat yourself and your guests to this welcoming scent by lighting some candles. Again, as candles come in many different scents, you can choose whatever scent makes you feel most at home.

When designing a home, keep in mind that the home design reflects both the house and its dwellers. Your home design should give guests an understanding of who you are, where you’ve been and what you like. Not only should the design be as unique as you, but it should also be cozy, welcoming and functional to ensure that you can fully enjoy the time you spend at home.
