7 Ways to Make the Most of Storage During Your New Home Design

If you’re building a brand new home design, you may hesitate at the idea of storage, thinking that it will blow out your budget. But storage is actually a very cost effective option, particularly when compared to replacing all your belongings once your new home is complete.

We’ve put together a few tips to help you make the most of storage during your new home build.

Choose Your Storage Space Carefully

If you’re going to invest in storage, make sure that you choose a secure storage space that suits your needs. So, obtain quotes from multiple storage providers. Ask them all the questions that you need to:

  • Do they offer pick-up and delivery services and whether there are any associated costs?
  • Is the space climate controlled, security monitored 24/7, and fire monitored?
  • Is there are different sized units available?
  • Do they offer insurance?

Establish What Sort of Service You Want?

Traditional self storage options are fairly bare-boned. It’s usually just a mesh cage or a bricked room that you have to padlock yourself. There are a range of storage options available that provide additional features such as climate-control and sophisticated security systems. Just be sure you have the storage option that’s right for you.

Look for Extra Services, like Professional Pick Up!

You may get a couple of weeks from the storage day and decide you just don’t have time to pack or even drop anything off. In light of this, you should look for companies that offer extra services, such as a packing service and a pick-up service. That way, if time starts to disappear, you have the option to have your belongings packed, picked up and delivered straight into storage with any hassle.

Pack Smart for Your New Home Design

Don’t rush packing; take your time while packing to ensure that nothing is likely to get damaged whilst in storage. This means that you should individually wrap fragile and delicate items. Use the proper boxes for the proper job, and never over-pack moving boxes. Cover furniture with heavy duty movers’ blankets.

Maximise the Space in Your Storage Unit

You’ve paid for your storage unit, so make sure that you maximise all possible space within it. To do this, you can use plywood boards between stacks of moving boxes, creating makeshift shelving. Not only will this sure up stacks of boxes, it will also ensure that you use every possible inch of space.

Protect Your Belongings from Moisture

Sometimes self storage units can be susceptible to moisture. To help prevent any of your belongings being damaged by mould and mildew, there are a few things you can do. Firstly, cover the bottom of your unit with wooden pallets. This lifts all your belongings up off the floor, where the majority of moisture is likely to gather. Secondly, never rest any of your belongings flush against the walls of your storage unit. If there is any condensation inside the unit, it will run down the inside of the walls, dampening anything it comes into contact with along the way.

Opt for a Storage Provider with Flexible End-Dates

When it comes to building a new home design, unforeseen circumstances and delays can arise. So, it’s always a good idea to opt for a provider that is flexible on end-dates. You really want to be able to have a few week’s leeway just in case there are any delays. Storage spaces tend to book out fast; so don’t assume that you’ll just be able to lengthen your booking.

Use these tips to make your new home build easier, less stressful and far more efficient. If you can rest easy in knowing that your belongings are safe, it will make it far easier to concentrate on all the other important tasks that a new home design entails.
