Suburb Profile: Cranbourne

For almost as long as Melbourne has existed, its suburban footprint has spread further from the CBD. It now sprawls some 40 kilometres south-east to the rapidly growing Cranbourne. Cranbourne has a median house price of just over $540,000, making it accessible for many home-buyers. Idyllic holiday destinations, the Mornington Peninsula and Phillip Island are also a short drive away.

The Neighbours
Cranbourne has been an area of significant population growth over the past decade. The 2016 ABS Census revealed that 20,000 people now call the suburb home, up from 14,700 in 2006. Nearby Cranbourne East was Australia’s fastest growing suburb in 2017, when new housing developments allowed the population to increase by 27%. This area is a popular choice for families, who occupy 75% of Cranbourne’s homes.

The School Run
Cranbourne is serviced by a number of local schools. Local government primary schools include Cranbourne East Primary School and Cranbourne Primary School, while St Agatha’s Primary School is the local Catholic primary school. Casey Grammar is a local independent school that offers Prep-12. Other secondary schools include Cranbourne Secondary College and St Peter’s College. Primary and secondary school options are spread around the suburb, which allows for an easy school run regardless of where you live. For those who want to pursue tertiary education, Monash University’s Clayton Campus is only a short distance away.

Commute
As is the case for many Melbourne suburbs, catching the train is the most time effective choice for those commuting from Cranbourne into the city during peak times. Cranbourne is connected to Melbourne’s train network by the Cranbourne line. It takes an hour to reach the city, although, as Cranbourne station is at the beginning of the line, commuters are likely to find a seat for the journey. Trains leave every 10 to 20 minutes. Drivers heading towards the city can choose between the Eastern Freeway, the Monash Freeway, and the South Gippsland Highway. However, each of these routes are notoriously congested during peak time, with an average journey taking up to two hours.

What’s going on?
Cranbourne is a local hub for sport, recreation, and shopping. Locals shop along High Street, which features the Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre. The Cranbourne Racecourse brings trainers and punters from all over the state. The annual Cranbourne Cup is a highlight on the country racing calendar. Casey Fields is found in Cranbourne East and is the home of the Casey Demons. Many other sports facilities including an athletics track, netball courts, tennis courts, and a cycling track can be found in the complex. Cranbourne is also home to the Royal Botanical Gardens, a 363-hectare park that features walking tracks, BBQ areas, and diverse flora and fauna. If you’re still looking for something to do, the beaches of Western Port are just a 20-minute drive away, while Phillip Island and beyond are easily accessible via the South Gippsland Highway.
