Suburb Profile: Benalla

Are you tired of the hustle and bustle of the big city life and want to lay your roots someplace quiet and relaxing? Located about 212 km North-East of the State capital Melbourne, is the picturesque Benalla. First proclaimed a city in 1965, it is a booming small town that beats city life, is rich in history and has a thriving art’s scene. With high growth in investment opportunities, introducing plenty of employment opportunities, and several of its trust sites such as its own Botanic Gardens and the Stringybark Creek Site, this suburb is a place you will be proud to call home.

The Neighbours
The population of Benalla is set to rapidly move from 14,000 to 16,000 over the next three to four years. The median age of residents in this town is 46. Industries throughout this town include agriculture support services, a medium density fibreboard factory, Thales Australia and aviation. Through new and growing commercial operations, the town will create approximately 1,000 new jobs, which in turn will attract more residents.

Commute
Just two hours from Melbourne by road or train, the suburb offers both public transport and freeway access, via the Hume Freeway and Midland Highway. The Benalla Bus lines run a service every hour on each of the two routes, servicing the West and East sides of the city. Benalla Railway Station is on the North East railway line. Benalla Airport YBLA first began as a major RAAF training base during WWII. Now, it serves as the home of the Gliding Clubs of Victoria.

The Benalla Flexible Learning Centre also offers alternative education for young adults aged up to 22 years. The Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE has a campus located in this suburb, and it includes the Benalla Performing Arts and Convention Centre.
