Bedroom Design Tips: Maximise Your Sleep & Dream Away

A bedroom is one of the most important rooms in the home. It is where we spend most of our time getting well rested and should be designed with maximum comfort to ensure we sleep soundly. Making sure your bedroom design is sleep-friendly will mean that you will never have to count sheep again, and the 3 pm yawns from lack of rest will soon stop, making you energised and refreshed for the working week. Below are some design tips to transform your room into a dreamer’s sanctuary:

1. Scent
Having a comforting sense of scent circulating in your bedroom will enhance the feelings of tiredness and will result in a night of better sleep. If you have a favourite scent, purchasing an ambient fragrance in the form of candles or a diffuser will ultimately relax your body, sending you into a deep undisturbed slumber. Whilst candles should never be burnt overnight, lighting one an hour before bed and letting the room absorb the odour will be beneficial and when placed nicely, can look very aesthetically pleasing.

2. Light
An important thing to remember about bedroom design is having the space multi-functional for different times of the day. By adding in thick curtains, you can still enjoy a light and breezy bedroom in the daytime, whilst submerging yourself into total darkness when it is time to sleep. The best sleep is always achieved when the light is next to none.

3. Temperature
The climate of your room will have a big impact on the quality of your nightly rest. It is stated that the best sleep occurs when the air in the room sits between 15-19 degrees Celsius. When considering a potential bedroom design, look to include a wall-mounted air conditioner or a ceiling fan.

4. It’s All In The Mattress
A good mattress is one of the paramount ingredients to ensuring a good night’s sleep. Having an old mattress that is worn out, lumpy or too hard/ soft will make it difficult to get comfortable and will result in sleepless nights filled with more tossing than a toss salad. Investing in a good quality mattress will take away the pain of sleepless nights, making sure you rest better than a Roman Emperor.

5. Paint Your Walls
A British study has shown the effects of painted walls on the average sleep cycle, revealing that cooler toned colours that provoke feelings of calm like blue and green work best to maximise sleep. Conversely, colours like purple, brown and grey were shown to reduce sleep as they have stimulating and depressive qualities.

6. Declutter
Do you ever sit in the dark surrounded by piles of clothes and clutter and suddenly feel less calm and distracted? Remember that your bedroom’s sole purpose is a place for rest, it is not a gym, a laundry or an office. Clearing out the space of unnecessary items like gym equipment or your work office supplies will prevent your mind from wandering and worrying. Decluttering your space will help to declutter your mind, giving you a maximum opportunity to sleep soundly.
